Letters and other papers, 1826-1835.

The collection consists of letters and official documents arranged in chronological order. One letter (1826) details methods of preparing and caring for leather, particularly the distillation of different oils. A letter of 1833 written to Horace Vernet suggests that Vernet has a good chance at the professorship left vacant by Guérin. Mérimée also defends the selection of professors only from members of the Institute by claiming that that compensates for the difference in jurisdiction between the Académie and the École des Beaux-Arts. He points out that theory has a limited place in the fine arts, unlike the sciences. Therefore instruction should be the prime goal of members from both institutions. The collection also contains four documents signed by Mérimée pertaining to Joseph Leyendecker's studies at the École des Beaux-Arts.
